Al and I were delighted about our upcoming chance to spend a year on assignmentl in Arlington, Virginia, our old home. As we looked into places to live, I realized that in the last 10 years things had changed a lot, and we gratefully accepted the offer of my longtime friend June offered to let us stay at her house until we could get comfortably settled. The joy of seeing this old friend again was great, but it was dampened when I noticed that she seemed sad and, worse, didn’t want to talk about it. Eventually though, we relaxed into the old gossipy ways and she started to tell me about how her youngest son had volunteered for Iraq and had now returned from his first tour of duty. Josh had been a young teenager last time I had seen him, an obstreperous kid, hard to manage, and June and Bob used to worry about him. Follow the rules?? Never! But now! — he wore discipline like an old habit. No more boisterous shouting, shaking the house with his horse laugh. His bearing was erect and dignified. Al and I tried to draw him into conversation about his experiences, but he was politely reluctant. Josh had no scars that we could see. We could see that that the war wounds he sustained were inner ones. Usually you think of self-willed, lively kids as being somewhat insensitive, yet strapping, athletic young Josh was, well, sad.

Josh wanted to reenlist and go for another tour since he didn’t have any wounds, but June and Bob were hoping to discourage this until they saw some signs of the re-emergence of the normal Josh.

Al is a psychologist for the police force in our city, and he had access to information on counselors who handled interpersonal maladjustments in officers who were in active assignments. With June and Bob’s permission, he started making a few phone calls to get a list of professionals in psychology Washington DC and in the northern Virginia areas, where there is a wealth of colleges and schools specializing in studying emotional disorders. Group psychotherapy might be one avenue for Josh, Al thought. Then there were psychotherapists such as Karen Osterle and others who were experienced in helping military and government personnel on an individual basis in dealing with the type of culture shock experienced after tours of duty in troubled areas of today’s world.

I was glad that we hadn’t found an apartment right away. It was fun and heartwarming to be close to June and Bob again. We relived the old days and the sometimes wild adventures we had had and there was laughter and fun again. As we relaxed and enjoyed ourselves, gradually Josh started to relax, he started to smile again, and we were even treated to the horse laugh of olden times. The warm times we were having together as comfortable old friends was bring healing power to Josh!.

After we settled into our new digs, June told us good news. Josh was becoming open to starting a course of psychotherapy and that he had agreed to see a professional before he signed up for Iraq again!

“Sure! Let’s go to Carnival Mall!” Maude remembered seeing a Crate and Barrel store there that was pretty upscale.
